Energy Saving Tips
Installing loft and cavity wall insulation is the most effective way to save energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
In addition to this there are more easy ways to save energy, money, and tackle climate change.
Heating
Keeping a regular check on your thermostat and reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by approximately 10%. You could save around £40 per year.
Washing
A shower on average uses one fifth of the hot water a bath uses.
Hot Water Tank
Make sure your hot water tank is properly insulated with a minimum 80mm jacket.
Laundry
Washing clothes at 40°C costs a quarter of the price of washing at the hottest cycle. If you have a small amount of laundry, use the half load or economy programme.
Lights
Low energy light bulbs use one fifth of the energy an ordinary lightbulb. You could save up tp £60 over the lifetime of the bulb. Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Doors and Windows
Draught proofing saves heat loss and improves the comfort of your home. Closing your curtains at night helps to stop heat escaping through your windows.
Fridges and Freezers
Locate in a cool place and defrost regularly.
Kettles
Only boil as much water as needed for immediate use.
Cooking
Microwave ovens use up to 75% less energy to heat food than conventional cookers.
Energy Efficiency Labelling
Look out for the energy efficiency label next time you purchase a fridge, freezer or laundry appliance. Purchase the most efficient you can afford.
